Reflections Art Festival 2014

Wow - the Festival was GREAT!

Congratulations to the winners of the now annual raffle are:
Greenwing Teal (by Harvey Welch) goes to Larry Mann from Martensville
Meadowlark (by Bob Lavender) goes to Ivy La Buick from Saskatoon

Will be posting pics as soon as we get them off the camera. First we will be taking a well-deserved rest!

We enjoyed all the displays and competitions - the works of art were incredible. Hopefully the competitors were able to take advantage of the opportunity to network, possibly receive critique from the judges and will be returning with even better work next year (if that is even possible).  Congratulations to all the winners.

Owl Eyes & Ears

We had a most interesting person visit the Saskatchewan Wildlife Art Association booth at the Saskatoon Exhibition Art Showcase today. She is a vet working at the university and she was full of interesting facts.

Did you know that you can see the back of an owl's eyeball when you look into his ear?  And that you can shine a light into the eye you can see it shining out of the ear.  I got home and "googled" this - it is true! http://tinyurl.com/m448rlk

Did you know that birds' eye pupils do not dilate automatically as ours do? Birds can control that themselves.

Who knew?  She expressed an interest in visiting us at our Reflections Art Festival this October. Hope she makes it - she could entertain us all for hours!

Art on the Web Presentation

On Tuesday, April 22 SWAA members came out to learn more about marketing their work on the internet.

Paul Constable and Holly Edwards-Grove shared their expertise with us.

Paul Constable has extensive experience marketing art on the web through his website: Artists in Canada at Artists in Canada.com

Paul graduated from the Alberta College of Art & Design in 1976 and has a long list of accomplishments. Visit his website to find out more: PaulConstable.com at PaulConstable.com

Holly Edwards-Grove graduated from the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), Drawing. She has continued her education to obtain her Advanced Web Design CertificateWeb Page, Digital/Multimedia and Information Resources Design from the Online School of Design.

Holly sells her custom made cake toppers primarily using Etsy.

This was a very inspiring evening and we all came away with new ideas on how to market our work.

SWAA at Hues Art Supply

Paul Trottier treated us to an introductory tour of his new art supply store on March 25:
Hues Art Supply Ltd.
1818 Lorne Avenue, Saskatoon - the corner of Taylor and Lorne

Paul opened his store in January 2014, and is still determining the needs of artists in this area.  Drop in to let him know what your art specialty is - if he doesn't already stock what you require he will be happy to order it in.  The store is open during the day from Tuesday - Saturday.  Closed Sunday & Monday.

Check him out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/huesartsupply

Paul is a member of the Saskatoon group "Men Who Paint" and I (Beth) was able to purchase a copy of the book:  "Men Who Paint - halfway to heaven".  This is a book of their works from Ivvanik National Park in the Yukon.  Paul signed it for me and I look forward to attending some of their shows to have the other artists sign it as well.

SWAA At Saskatoon Collectors' Show

We had a great time at the Saskatoon Collectors' Show this past weekend.  Flat work artists Jewel Buhay, Linda Skibinsky and Beth Campbell were there to show off their work.  Harvey Rebalkin wasn't able to attned, but he sent a few of his pieces.  Willard Dyck, Leroy Royer, Harvey Welch and Bob Drury brought some of their carvings.  Harvey, Bob and Leroy did some demo'ing to show people techniques involved in carving.  Wayne Keating had some super photos to display. It was fun getting together; we generated a lot of interest in the association; and - we made some sales. Doesn't get any better than that!

Thursday, 13 March 2014

Some photos from March 8 and 9 at the show in Yorkton.

Thanks to Paul & Roxanne Perron and Tania Nault
for representing  the association.

SWAA Participating in Shows

It sounds like Paul Perron and Tania Nault had a successful show at the Outdoor Sportsman Show in Yorkton last weekend with lots of interest in our association.

Just a quick reminder that the Saskatchewan Wildlife Artist's Association will have a booth at the Saskatoon Collector's Show at Prairieland Park this weekend.

Members who want to have their work displayed should contact me (Beth Campbell).  We will be setting up the booth Friday morning starting at 10:00 am and are looking for volunteers to be there during the weekend.  We will be able to make sales at this show, but you must be a current member of our association to participate in our booth.

Even if you are not able to participate at the booth, we hope that you are able to take in the show.  Friday: 6-10 pm, Saturday: 10 am - 6 pm and Sunday 10 am - 4 pm.

Visit their website for more information:  http://www.saskatooncollectorshow.com/

Patricia Louise Grove
July 28, 1949 - February 28, 2014
Patricia Louise (Bauer) Grove passed away suddenly at her home on Friday, February 28, 2014. Beloved wife of Gary Grove, dear mother of Michael and wife Nicola, Tim and wife Holly, stepmother of Nadine and husband Blair Lacroix and loving grandmother of Joshua Lacroix, Abigail, Elizabeth and Katherine Grove and many "grandkitties". Pat was born on July 28, 1949 in Stratford, Ontario. She received a degree in computer science from the University of Waterloo and met Gary while working in Ottawa. Pat and Gary were married in 1973, and in 1986 they moved with their sons to Saskatoon. A stay-at-home mother, Pat was able to pursue her true passions in life: wildlife art and photography. She joined the Saskatoon Wildlife Art Association and was chair/co-chair of the annual Reflections of Nature Wildlife Art Show for many years, during which she entered photographs, paintings, drawings and won numerous awards including the 2013 Best-in-Show. Predeceased by her father, Albert Bauer, brother, John Bauer, brother-in-law, Don Elligsen and mother-in-law, Gladys Grove. She is survived by her mother, Edith (nee Alles) Bauer, brother Jim (Janet) Bauer, sister Debbie Elligsen and brother Paul (Wendy) Bauer, father-in-law, Garnet Grove and sisters-in-law Gloria (Chris) Chandler and Bonnie (Gerry) Milne and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received for viewing at the Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 Fourth Avenue North, Saskatoon on Thursday, March 6, 2014 from 1-3 p.m. The Funeral Service is at 3 pm in the chapel of the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Saskatoon SPCA, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one's choice would be appreciated. Arrangements are entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home. I received this email from Holly:

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Pat Grove. Late February 28, Pat died of a heart attack. I will send funeral details when they have been arranged. I have no words to express the horrible loss this is.
Holly Edwards-Grove

Pat will be missed by SWAA.  She was a hard-working chair for the Reflections show and seemed to be on top of everything.  If anyone had a question, Pat had the answer.  She was looking forward to passing all this knowledge on to our new chair Lana.  And since Lana has thoughts of new directions the show could take, Pat was busy making a list of ideas to help her facilitate that.  Sure hope someone can find that list......

Pat welcomed 6 of us into her home each Tuesday to paint. I appreciated her input and her critiques of my work. I am sure that Lola, Audrey, Holly, Harvey and Judy will feel the same.  We will miss her.

Tuesday, 25 February 2014

We had 14 enthusiastic members brave the cold weather to get together and create. The food was great - everyone even liked my dill soup! Must get together to have fun like this more often.

Thursday, 20 February 2014

We had a great meeting on Tuesday night - planning this year's October show. The show will now be called the Reflections Art Festival. There will be more of an emphasis on art for display and will celebrate all art. We will plan on providing more training sessions and workshops. This is along with our competitions. Lots of hard work will be needed - so all volunteers are welcomed! Don't miss our next planning meeting on March 11 (second Tuesday of the month).

Tuesday, 18 February 2014

The Saskatoon Collector's Show is March 14 - 16.  Has anyone ever shown their work there?  Do you think this would be a good spot for SWAA to have a table?  Cost would be $240 for the first table and less for each one after that.  Saskatoon Collector's Show

Monday, 17 February 2014

We had a successful Merry Valentines Brunch on Sunday, February 16 with about 20 artists and/or partners attending.  The gift exchange was a blast - as always with a lot of strategizing and "stealing" going on.  Everyone who participated came away with a wonderful example of another artist's work.
