Wednesday 4 November 2015

The 25th Anniversary of the Reflections show was great! Switching to Hall C was interesting. Way more visible, but lacking the luxury of the previous location. No carpet and not as much drapery made a more industrial feel. More room - different shape.

The free admission in the visible location brought in a lot of people. The vendors were impressed with the increased traffic. The donations received nearly matched our admissions from previous years.

Pumpkin carving generated lots of fun. One of the carvers went on to appear on Global News: http://tinyurl.com/pjbed8v (on her Frosty Tidbits.com site).
Two of the pumpkins purchased were donated to Ronald McDonald House. Those were the pumpkins carved by Matt Bradley (98.3 Cool FM) and the Global News team of Ryan Kessler and Carly Robinson.

A bigger turnout for the Quick Draw and the Pin Carving on Sunday morning provided more for the afternoon's auction. And more items in the miniature competitions was great.

A few bugs to work out - with the main glitch being our payment system. Monaris seemed to lock us out at critical times, like half way through the auctions.

An impressive auction booklet was produced but we forgot to put it out for the auction. Big oops.

Location of noisy workshops vs. areas where people congregate needs to be addressed. Not well planned this year.

The photo slideshow was not great. Trying to show some superb photos on a projector system did not work out well. The area would need to be darkened to show properly. We will be looking for another system for another year - perhaps a large screen TV.

Many of the volunteers organizing this event have been doing it for just about the entire 25 years and are becoming worn out. Some have been there for all the shows. We will be looking for "new blood" to add to the committee to plan our 2016 show if it is to continue as an annual event.

So - SWAA members - come out and help us plan.

I came across this and thought that I would pass it on to SWAA members. The Rotary is holding a contest to promote nature; this is what they say:

"Before creating your Contest entry, you must first get outdoors and discover nature in your own community! From your own backyard to your nearest park, you can find plants, animals and beautiful landscapes and sights at every turn that could inspire your Contest entry."

There are categories for Art - Photography - Writing - Video - Music.
The contest is open from May 1 - Nov 1, 2015.
For ages 19 and under.
Go to their website for more information:

SWAA Picnic

We had a great time at the home of Leroy & Rina Royer. It was a bit cool, but had a warm campfire and great company. Some of us stayed later and got to see photos from Gail Bissett's cruise to the Antarctic.

Roxanne Perron took more photos.

SRVAS Banquet

I dragged my husband Doug up to Shekinah for the banquet on Tuesday evening  (those of you who know Doug know that it really is not hard to "drag" him anywhere).

The food was awesome! Great company! Beautiful scenery! If I had paid more attention prior to this I would have caught on that I could take my paints up and spend the day (or days) doing my own thing and painting.  Would have cut down on the time commitment and the cost since I could stay as long as I had time & money to be there.

I would like to say that I will do this "next year" - but the future of the school is yet to be decided due to a declining attendance.

Reflections 2015 Invitation Handout

Cam Merkle has created invitation handouts for the 2015 Reflections Art Festival. He has distributed some to the members who were at the last meeting - printed on bright yellow paper.

You can print your own by following this link:
http://www.saskwildlifeart.com/Reflections/2015Invitation.pdf

Print double sided with page 1 as one side and page 2 as the other. One sheet will create 8 invitations.

There is a link to these on the Reflections site - top left - 2015 Reflections Invitation.  http://www.reflectionsartfestival.com/

Spread the word. This show is gearing up to be one of the best yet!

SRVAS Banquet

Today (May 15) is the last day to book for the Tuesday evening banquet at the Saskatchewan River Valley Art School (June 2).

Catching up from Jan 18

Just realized that I have all these great photos from our Winter Luncheon (January 18) that I have not shown to anyone...... it was a great party!  We exchanged some wonderful pieces of art in our Chinese auction. Rather than clogging this blog up with them - I have created a new page for those who are interested in checking them out. My photography skills did not capture all the smiles, but a good time was had by all.

Alicia Popoff

Members of SWAA extend deepest sympathy to Les Potter upon the death of his wife Alicia. Les Popoff has had a presence with our association as a judge at Reflections and as an instructor at SRVAS. He and his late wife were very involved in the art community in the province.

Wednesday 25 February 2015

Was a cold and icy night for our Potluck & Paint session last night - so there was not a huge turnout. An accident on the North Bridge had traffic backed up for hours, but luckily it was traffic we were meeting, so it didn't slow us down. Those who came out had a great and relaxing time. Jewel Buhay from Allan worked on an alcohol ink tile under the watchful eye of Lori Merkle. Cam Merkle from Martensville used some of his woodburning tools to do some work.  Holly Edwards worked on a preliminary sketch for a cake topper that she is developing (My Custom Cake Topper). I (Beth Campbell) worked on a chimpanzee painting on a leaf. Lola Hingtgen didn't bring a piece to work on so enjoyed a relaxing time with her husband Charlie and my husband Doug watching others.

Good food + good company + good talent = GREAT TIME in spite of the cold.

(Obviously some of us are hardier than others.)
